At the beginning Ralph is elected Chief, but Jack gains more and more control throughout the book, and ends up stripping Ralph of his title, leaving him alone. At the end, when the boys are rescued by the Naval officer, Ralph declares himself Chief and nobody disagrees, even Jack stays quiet.
