The Senate is the Upper Chamber of the United States Congress. The Senate is made of 100 elected Senators, with 2 Senators for every state.

Senators are elected to serve 6 years at a time, and take it in turns. 1/3 of the Senate comes up for reelection every two years.

All Bills (proposed laws) must be approved by the Senate. Usually they have to be approved by the House of Representatives (the Lower Chamber) first, and then approved by the Senate second. The President then signs the Bill and turns it into an Act (a law).

In addition to approving laws, the Senate has a few other responsibilities which the House does not have. They are needed to approve treaties and confirm appointments of judges and cabinet secretaries (made by the President).

Due to its smaller size, the Senate has a different atmosphere to the House of Representatives. The Senate is usually more relaxed, more informal, less covered by the media, and the gap between the Democrats and Republicans is smaller. Timewasting is a popular weapon in the Senate; apart from making ridiculously long speeches (the record is 24 hours), Senators may also find other ways to obstruct the passing of a bill they oppose. The Minority also has a lot more power in the Senate, and there's no overall leadership like in the House (the House has a Speaker in charge).

The Senate meets at the US Capitol in one end of the building, and the House meets at the other.
