Modern cell theory is based upon the combined work of:

  • Matthias Schleiden, who was a German botanist (1838). He concluded that all plants are composed of cells.
  • Theodor Schwann, who was a German physiologist (a scientist specializing in the functioning of the body). He discovered that all animals were composed of cells.
  • Rudolf Virchow. He was a German Physician (1855) and concluded "that cells come from other cells" effectively disproving the "Generatio Spontanea"-theory.
