They have to compete with cougars and bears for prey, as well as rival packs of their own species. These could be termed, "enemies".

The most significant causes of mortality for grown wolves are hunting, poaching and car accidents. Aside from humans, other wolf packs seem to be wolves' deadliest enemy. Wolf packs have a "territory" they hunt in, and if they venture near the boundary between their territory and another pack's, a battle ensues.

Young wolf pups can fall victim to predators such as bears, big cats and other wolves.

Sometimes a wolf will die from hunting injuries imposed by its prey. Large hoofed mammals like bison and moose can be very dangerous to hunt.
