Accreditation is normally conferred on a person or institution by a governing board of the profession or industry.

For example, if you were an accountant you could be a member of the Society of Charted Accountants.

Doctors are normally members of a professional Medical Board.

The institutions that grant accreditation are normally recognised nationally or internationally as the standard for practice within that profession. They would deal with issues such as a Code of Conduct and ethics of its members.

In the case of entire industries, ISO is one which sets international standards, companies normally strive to undergo the fairly rigorous processes in order to be ISO accredited.
