Stephen F. Austin was arrested because he sent a letter back to Texas stating that they should begin forming a government if given permission from Santa Anna. The letter was intercepted by Mexican Officials who believed he was trying to start a revolution.

Stephen F. Austin was released because he was never charged with a crime, and never had a trial.

Austin was arrested in December of 1833 by Mexican Vice-President Farias, who believed Austin was fomenting rebellion.
