John Bellingham assassinated the prime minister Spencer Perceval in 1812. A tradesman and commercial agent, Bellingham had faced bankruptcy in 1794 and then in 1804 was detained in Russia under charges of debt. His appeals of injustice to the British Consul and ambassador went unheard. He was finally released in 1809 and returned to England intent on seeking redress but he failed. Exasperated, on May 11, 1812, he approached the prime minister in the lobby of the House of Commons and shot him in the heart. It was the only time to date that a British prime minister was assassinated.
Bellingham was immediately taken into custody. He was tried two days later. The trial was quick: he was convicted and sentenced to hang. On May 18, he was hanged in public.
