As chief executive, President Nixon was responsible for enforcing federal laws, managing the executive branch of the government, and implementing domestic and foreign policy initiatives. He oversaw significant events such as the Apollo 11 moon landing and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency. Nixon also emphasized détente in foreign relations, notably improving relations with China and the Soviet Union. His presidency, however, was marred by the Watergate scandal, which ultimately led to his resignation.
