Theodore Roosevelt became president when William McKinley was assassinated. Chester Arthur became president when James Garfield was assassinated. Lyndon B. Johnson became president when JFK was assassinated. Andrew Johnson became president when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. But I assume you are referring to John Tyler, whose nickname was "Accidental President" or "His Accidency". He became president just 30 days after President William Henry Harrison died. Harrison's death was attributed to his giving the longest inaugural speech in history at the time, and did so without wearing a hat, causing him to fall ill and die just 30 days later. At the beginning of 1945, it was Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was serving his fourth term as president (which had never happened in US history). But Mr. Roosevelt was seriously ill, and in April of 1945, he died suddenly. His vice president, Harry S. Truman became president at that time.

Ill is not a verb, therefore it does not have a past tense. It is used with the auxiliary, 'be', i.e 'I am ill'(present) Therefore, past would be 'I was ill'.
