Well, since Rome became a republic in 509 BC and the United States did not become a republic until the 18th century AD., you would have to say that Rome became a republic first.

The Founding Fathers of the US and later the Framers of the US Constitution looked at the structure of the ancient Roman Republic as a model for their idea of the new US republic. Flawed as it was, the Roman Republic had what can be termed a government structure where power was shared. The US Constitution created a central government where powers are shared. It has been said that the US republic was the first one after ancient Rome's republic.
He meant 'keep' as in 'maintain': 'a republic, if you can maintain it'. Historically, republics don't have the best track record (I'm looking at you, Rome, Athens, and Florence). Benjamin Franklin meant that the republic that he had helped to created in the US was a gift, if the citizens of the US were able to make it work, and not let what happened to Rome happen to the US.
Ancient Rome has only two classes and only one of these classes can actually participate in voting. Currently the USA. lets any body (over a certain age) participate.
Well, my 6th grade class just finished up learning about Rome.... I do very well in Rome so this is pretty accurate information: Roman laws and government are important to the development to the US because it basically shaped the US government. You see, Rome was a republic, so are we... Ya making the connection? Anway... Rome's government was exactly like today's modern day US government. We have a min leader that was voted leader by the citizens. If Rome wasn't a republic back then, I bet we wouldv'e found another republic to base it off of but then again, we might just have a different government altogether. ~NerdyGirl
The Federal government of the United States is called a republic. For a somewhat reasonable comparison the US republic was the first one in the "new world" since ancient Rome was a republic. I use republic loosely with regards to Rome.
Not really most people equate the US with the Roman Republic because of the similarities in their governmental structures but this is mostly because the US was modeled after the Roman Republic as they considered it to be the longest lasting in the world even though this was in fact the Republic of Venice. Rome's great mistake lay in their teaching their barbarian enemies their superior tactics and equipping them with advanced weapons among many other faults, some mirrored in the US such as corruption in the bureaucracy but many of Rome's are not yet to be seen in the US.
Texas was a slave holding Republic and would become a slave holding state.
Ancient Roman influences on us were there republic and equal before the law! Equal before the law means that you were innocent until you were proven guilty.
The annexation of the Republic of Texas.
Yes, they didn't become a republic until after they gained their independence.

The US fought in southern Italy where they first landed all the way up to Rome.
