Stewart Island has been inhabited since the 13th century. The first people that built settlements on the island were the Maori people. They were mostly seasonal settlements. Meaning they traveled to the island when the food source they were hunting was available.

The first school ever built is believed to be Chengdu Shishi High School in China. It was built between 143 BC and 141 BC. It closed in 194 AD and reopened in 1661. The King's School in Great Britain opened in 597 AD and is the oldest continuously operated school.
