The Louvre palace, built in 1190 by King Philip II, Philippe Auguste, as an arsenal and fortress, was later enlarged and beautified by Charles V (r. 1364-1380). His successor Charles VI used it as a site for visiting royals to reside.
Francis I began to demolish it in the 1520s and commissioned an architect to build a new palace with four wings around a square court on the same site. The west and half of the south wings were completed by the original architect who began the updating process.
Following monarch's adhered to the theme and continued improvements.
From 1737 and on the Salon Carre' became a venue for regular exhibitions and the conversion to a museum, piece by piece began.
Improvements have followed up to today with the glass pyramid which was completed in 1989.
