I'm not certain where the original answer came from, but it is pretty well known that William Penn's secretary purchased what he called a Conestoga wagon from a Quaker named James Hendricks. Having later purchased canvas for his wagon, it is assumed that the design would be similar to the wagons used later. Indeed, Hendricks had land on the Old Wagon Road.
