Future Russian Admiral Makarov successfully fired the first under water self propelled torpedo in combat against the Turks in about 1877. Admiral Makarov later was killed in 1904 when his battleship struck a mine in the Yellow Sea during the Russian-Japanese War.

It has been thought that no date could be put on when the first boat was built as it is likely that as with such innovations, the wheel is another example, which pre-date history many individuals and societies would have used some method of water transport. With the lack of communication each would have solved the problem in their own way and at different times.

On the lighter side

Gronk and Ogg credit themselves with the invention of the first boat. Ogg for the boat itself and Gronk for the invention of dates and hence the very first calendar.

We come by this knowledge through ancient writings recently translated by Glassheimer Cruddinton II, the famous linguist and scholar. The cave etchings and writings were discovered in a cave near the South Pole and name the two early innovators.

Ogg and Gronk were innovators in a village at the edge of a small lake. The story goes that as new items were found by villagers, they were brought back to the village for display and discussion. After all these were ancient times and many items had, as yet, no names and were little understood. In the centre of the village was a large, flat slab of rock brought from Mt. Blarg, which for historical reasons was sacred, and items placed there were never moved until everyone had thoroughly dissected the thing.

Anyone caught moving an item before the required time lapse was screamed at by the villagers using the dreaded word 'BOO'. This was known as 'booing' or being 'booed'. After doing this the villages would walk away saying, "That's Booed him", this was often shortened to "Tha's booed" and eventually to "Taboo". By concatenation the large slab became known as the "Tabool" and eventually simply the "Table".

Ogg and Gronk were considering a recent infraction by a new refugee one day after the other men of the tribe had gone off to hunt. They were discussing what could be done to ensure the items brought back to the table would remain in the same place. After all, it had become tradition for the taboo items to be on display at all times, so moving them should have been under the same dire penalty. Anyone who visited did not know the consequences, putting them at risk for public humiliation.

As it happened there was a small island not far from the village shore in the lake, and Ogg thought that if the table were on that island it would be impossible for anyone to get to it and move the items. The problem was of course how to get the table there in the first place. It would be many generations before one of Ogg's descendants, Samuel Cunard, by his second wife, would create the great shipping line.

One day, after a tremendous storm, our heroes discovered that a tremendous Baobab tree by the lake had been stuck by lightning, knocking great slabs off the tree which subsequently fell in the water. Of course, being the leaders of the tribe, Gronk and Ogg went to investigate the damage made by the storm and discovered this peculiar phenomenon. Ogg, seeing one of the slabs, shouted to Gronk "Look, the Baobab floats"! Gronk, not paying to much attention to his friend misheard and thought he said "Look, the boat float"! Hence the name boat.

The idea dawned that something could be placed on the 'boat' and moved about on the water. Gronk waded into the water and found that the wood moved much easier on the surface of the lake than it first appeared it would. In fact, it was light and easily maneuverable, so that even Ogg's weight..he climbed on top of it...did not pose a problem for Gronk to guide.

After due discussion the table was placed on the 'boat'. Not really being prepared, the two tried to push the 'boat" out to the island by wading behind it, but soon found the water to be too deep. Not having Rhonda nearby, they searched around for a solution to the depth of the lake. Rhonda of course would have figured out that they needed a stick or something to guide the 'boat' to the destination.

Following the shore, the intrepid explorers soon found a fast moving creek that fed the lake and decided to haul the "boat" up the creek and allow the rushing water to propel the "boat" and its contents toward the island. Not understanding the concept of steering, they were of course eventually, "up the creek without a paddle" and the ride back down the creek was exciting. Eventually, the table was ferried to the island so the items were mostly out of reach and would remain in the same place forever.

When members of the village periodically brought back something new the item and it's discoverer were taken to the island to place the item on the table. This then became known as the Periodic Table, since new items became increasing rare as they were identified and integrated into general use.

These days became known as periods and Gronk decided to mark a rock with the new hammer and chisel he had just invented. This was the very first primitive calendar. This was also the earliest sign of the code which Samuel Morse made popular when the telegraph was invented. Dots and dashes were found in almost all cultures, thanks to Gronk's calendar and the popularity of using such a convenient time marker.

The chieftain of the village across the lake was a man named Ali the Imp. Ali was a tiny man only five times the length of his feet (which is the origin of the linear measurement handed down to us, and became known as the imp-alis foot now called the Imperial Foot) The men folk were usually referred to as Ali's men but this was invariably shortened to Aliens. It follows that the Aliens had traditions different from Gronk and Ogg's village, so anything that did not conform to the normal life in their tribe were referred to as "Alien Ideas". Eventually this was the genesis of tribal identity...and bigotry, for Alien ideas didn't carry nearly as much weight as those born in Gronk and Ogg's village.

The first boats were rafts, made from anything that would float. That would usually be a couple of tree trunks tied together. In other areas rafts of bamboo or papyrus bundles would have been first.

The first real boats were canoes made from bark, kayaks covered by hides, and of course, dugout canoes made from a hollowed out log.
