The first 'camera' (camera obscura) was built about a thousand years ago by Iraqi scientist Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen) . This camera was pretty huge!
Portable cameras were first made in the 1660's by Robert Boyle and Robert Hooke, although it wasn't until 1685 that a camera that was small and portable enough for practical purposes was built, by Johann Zahn.
Unfortunately, however, camera film had yet to be invented! The first permanent photograph was not produced until 1826, made using a light-sensitive (photographic) plate. And photographic film did not appear until 1876. The 'camera' phenomonen of an inverted image seen when light travels through a small hole was noted as being observed by Aristotle and Euclid as far back as the 4th century BC, although there is no record of them actually making a camera at that time.
