America was probably named after the Italian explorer and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. Vespucci made maps of the new world from his explorations (he made at least two trips) and from what he learned of others' trips. He identified himself on his maps with a Latinized version of his name: Americus Vespucius.
A Germanic geographer named Martin Waldseemueller came across references to lands Americus had mapped, and referred to the new lands with a feminized version of his name: America. The name stuck.
