Through out history myths have been used to explain things people did not uderstand. We still do them today.
Myths originally started in Greece. People came up with these myths to explain how things came to be. For example, the story of Athena and Arachne explains how spiders came to be.
They were their religion.
No one came up with the idea of markets in medieval times. Markets existed for thousands of years before the middle ages began.

I looked this up and didn't find any thing in Norse so I went to old English and came up with two words "sceoh" and "hemming".
The end of the Roman empire up to the Norman invasion of England in 1066 is the period known as the Dark Ages. The end of the Dark Ages is often counted as the beginning of the Middle Ages in British History.
