The word hurricanes is derived from the word huracan which began with the Carib Indians of the West Indies. The word huracan represented one or all of three things; a Taino god, a Carib god, and/or a Mayan storm god named Hunranken. Following this, the Spanish colonists then changed the word from huracan to hurricane.

American forecasters began naming hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean when they occurred in 1953. They got the idea from the U.S. military. They named a storm "Betsy" and then they realized it was easier to say then saying " the big storm at 32.3 degrees North and 74 degrees West" on the radio. After that they decided to name hurricanes and now the World Meteorological Organization has the right to name Hurricanes.
