To file as head of household, these are the general rules:

  • You have to have paid for more than half of the household expenses.
  • You have to be unmarried for the tax year (typically either never married, divorced, or separated for at least 6 months). Military postings and prison incarcerations don't count as separations.
  • You have to have a qualifying child or dependent, that you can claim an exemption for, living with you (someone very closely (child/parent) related to you who is under 19, completely disabled , or who you support). Parents in nursing homes can also count.

Be sure to read the IRS form to clarify since tax rules change all the time, and please consult a tax expert if you aren't sure whether you qualify.

Do I have to to file income tax returns for state of Maine if i filed a federal tax return and and have 0 adjusted gross income?

If you are a residentof Maine who is required to file a federal income tax return, you must file a Maine income tax return. If you are not required to file a federal return, but do have income subject to Maine income tax resulting in a Maine income tax liability, a Maine return must be filed. You do not have to file a Maine income tax return if you meet all of the following requirements: 1) your Maine taxable income is $2,000 or less, 2) you claim yourself as an exemption on your return, AND 3) you are not subject to the Maine Minimum Tax. However, you must file a return to claim any refund due to you.

You made 7500.00 in income and you are 16 do you have to file an income tax return?

Yes you would be required to file the 1040 federal income tax return correctly and completely and send it to the correct IRS address. As a qualified dependent on another taxpayers income tax return you will not be allowed to claim your own exemption for yourself on your 1040 federal income tax return. Be SURE and check the box that will indicate this and DO NOT CLAIM THE 3650 exemption amount on exemption line of the 1040 tax return that you will be using for this purpose.

If you are a individual taxpayer and you sell your household items at more than they cost you and you make a profit on them then you would have some income that you would have to report on your 1040 income tax return. If you are in the business of selling household belongings then you are a self employed taxpayer and will have to use the schedule C of the 1040 income tax return to report your gross sale and expenses from your business operation.
