A tanner did his job. In the Middle Ages a job of a tanner was learned as an apprenticeship and was considered a very stinky job. They used urine to take the fur off of an animals and let the hide rot so they could scrape off the fur. Then, they let the hide dry out and rubbed it down with lard to make it soft. The tanner was always located outside of towns.

In the old coinage system, there were two tanners (or sixpences) to one shilling. A guinea was the equivalent of 1 pound & 1 shilling. There were 20 shillings in a pound. Therefore there were 42 tanners in a guinea.
