Who coined the word gentleman?

It goes back to the middle ages, when it was probably spelled "gentil man." It came from French and from Latin. The word originally referred to a man of noble birth, one who came from a good family, one who was chivalrous and had good manners. Today, it is no longer used only to refer to a man's upper class status, and it is sometimes just a polite way of speaking: Tell the gentleman that he can come in and sit down.
