The capstone was laid on the monument on December 6, 1884. The monument was formally dedicated on February 22 (Washington's birthday), 1885. The monument was constructed in two phases with a twenty year gap between them. You can see the dividing line on the monument where one phase ended and the other began. Phase One (1848 to 1858): To the 152-foot (46 m) level, under the direction of Superintendent William Daugherty. Phase Two (1878 to 1888): Work completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, commanded by Lt. Col. Thomas L. Casey.
The Taj Mahal was constructed as a tribute to Shah Jahan and his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. In 1631, after giving birth to their child, she died. He was inconsolable and commanded a two year mourning period. He wanted to build a monument to his wife and their love, this was accomplished with the Taj Mahal.
Because it is a monument to George Washington.

The rock layers were deposited during the Permian period, and subsequent uplift and erosion over time exposed these layers to create the iconic landscape of Monument Valley.
