"à la Claire fontaine" is a traditional French Folk song.It was brought to Québec where the coureurs des bois made various variations of it. According tothe booklet that comes with the Folkways Record's 'Canada Story in Song' By Allan Mills

Marc Lescatbot founded ''l'ordre de Bon-Temps''

(The order of Good Cheer). Besides the pleasures of

the table, L'ordre de Bon-Temps provided entertainment,

Plays were perfromed and many songs were sung, the old

songs of France. Particularly popularwere a tender

romatic ballad called ''A la claire fontaine'',

which has since been one of the favorite songs of French

Canada ''
