If you're looking for an "easy job" do not go into the Navy, merchant marine or other naval service.
The U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, the person who claimed that the merchant marine is a service branch is misinformed, the term merchant marine refers to an industry, like commercial airline.
the Navy comes to mind or Merchant Marine
Marine Engineering is on of the two branches of Merchant Navy service. The name of another branch is "Nautical Study"
The official color of the United States Merchant Marine is navy blue. This color is used in various uniforms and insignia to represent the maritime service. The navy blue is emblematic of the sea and the maritime heritage of the Merchant Marine.
There are mainly three ways to join merchant navy: 1. marine engineering 2. nautical science 3. crew rating
Alfred Mahan not quiet sure :/

The main difference in any country is mission. The "Navy" is a branch of the government in questioned who uses military built ships as weapons. The Merchant Marines or Merchant deal in Sealift or moving materials from one place to another. The Merchant Marine may also defend the Merchant ship he or she is on but the ship is not necessarily used by the military. Now in the US Navy we have MSC or Military Sealift Command. MSC moves materials around the world for the military but is more of a merchant Navy. Also the merchant navy may have military sailors stationed on them such as many of the US Navy's oilers.
