The Dutch settlement on Manhattan island was called New Amsterdam. It was founded in 1624 and served as the capital of New Netherland. In 1664, the settlement was seized by the English and renamed New York.

Delaware was taken from the Swedes by the Dutch in 1655 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch West India Company, seeking to expand its territory and influence, captured the Swedish settlement of Fort Christina (present-day Wilmington). However, the English later took control of Delaware from the Dutch in 1664, solidifying English dominance in the region.
