Going south from Ireland, you would come to Spain. From the extreme west of Ireland, you would pass Spain and Portugal and come to Morocco.
So as not to be left out of the trade in new resources. If they were to get left behind Spain and Portugal would eventually grow so powerful that they would be annexed by them.
Because without it Portugal would be just another badge in the flag of Spain, near the other five.
