In the Renaissance, artists recognized relationships and ratios that exist in nature. Leonardo's vitruvian man is an example of an artist studying and seeing relationships. Another example is the 'Golden Rectangle' or 'Golden Mean' discovered by the Ancient Greeks, it is considered the most pleasing ratio.
