The segregation (Jim Crow) laws were written by the governments in the South after Reconstruction, in order to prevent racial equality. The laws designated "separate but equal" facilities for colored (black, African-American) citizens and prohibited blacks from using "white only" facilities.
They began around 1876 and continued until 1965 when they were either declared unconstitutional or prohibited by the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
