The Louvre Palace (Palais du Louvre) which houses the museum was begun as a fortress by Philip II in the 12th century, and parts of this building are still visible in the crypt.

The building was repeated revised and improved from the Middle Ages and later

The glass and metal pyramid that is currently a well known small part of the Louvre

was designed by I.M. PEI
