Trafalgar Square was begun in 1820 and was completed in 1845 and was built to commemorate the British naval victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The original architect was John Nash who designed Regent Street but the square as seen today was by Charles Barry who also designed the Houses of Parliament.
