John Williams of "Star Wars" and "Jaws" fame wrote the score for "Superman: The Movie" in 1978 and they re-used parts of his original score in many of the sequels. He also conducted the London Symphony Orchestra for the actual soundtrack. Great stuff!
Crazy as it sounds the traditional TV Superman made in the late fifties did not have a traditional theme song- slogans- Up, Up, and Aaway! yes, but not a theme song. Being action oriented, maybe they felt a theme song sould slow up the pace. A number of Cartoons lacked theme songs- this may have had something to do with syndication. Cartoons are widely syndicated- as are and were comic strips- for example Dick Tracy ( comic strip) was ( Simulcast) identical content in both the NY Daily News and the Los Angeles times. With TV cartoons there could be copyright or royalty problems- so some TV cartoons quite simply did not have theme songs. One is reminded of a gay-nineties slogan, If contentment is the theme, Life"s melody is sweet! sorry but a sour note not all TV shows had or have had- theme songs.
There have been produced a number of songs called the "Superman Song". The artist Eminem has written one. The animated shows and live action films of the Superman franchise has also had various scores. We will not get into those, as they fall in the category theme music rather than songs.
