"The man" is only the word to begin with to answer the question. I always wonder god knows all these clumsy notations and counting procedures and used them to create such a beautiful real world. If one has got to say about the creation, one will definetely say it must not be so. Kronecker always says "god give us integers, the rest is man-made". To his frustration, Cantor comes up with "God gave us nothing, we built everything(numbers) from it". There is another man who really never bothers of the creation but the set of rules describing it. He is kurt. Godel, Hilbert's student. This guy's plan is to worry his own master with the statement, rather paradoxical, "No finite set of axioms subsumes the properties of integers". The term paradoxical in the sense, the above statement is quite intriguiging. It serves as a complete treasure of properties of integers whose meaning gives us a feel to feel the nonexistence of the complete treasure.................

Why does a elements atomic number affect its properties?

The atomic number of an element shows the number of protons that element has. Changing the number of neutrons creates a new isotope, and changing the number of electrons creates an ion. But changing the number of protons creates a different element.

What subatomic particle gives you the atomic number?

Protons. The atomic number of an atom is the number of protons in the atom. The identity of an atom is based on its atomic number, so a change in the number of protons mean an atom has turned into a different element. However, an addition or subtraction of neutrons creates different isotopes of an element, and a change in the number of electrons creates an ion of the element.

Atoms of the same element always have the same number of what?

All atoms of a given element have the same number of protons in a nucleus. It is the number of protons in an atom's nucleus that determines the elemental identity of any atom. Period.

Why do you think changing the number of neutrons does not create a new element?

Because an element is defined by it's atomic number. Which is defined by the number of protons found in atom. Adding a neutron creates an isotope of an element.
