According to the related link below, the SAT exam was initially referred to as the Army Alpha exam, invented by Robert Yerkes during the First World War. It was an IQ test developed to test all recruits to the U.S. Army when he wished to test the IQ level of U.S. Army soldiers. After the war, Yerkes' assistant Carl Brigham started adapting the test for use on college students as a college admissions test.
