In childhood, Lincoln lived with his father Thomas Lincoln, his mother Nancy Hanks Lincoln, and his sister Sarah Lincoln. When he was nine, however, Lincoln's mother died. A year later his father married Sarah Bush Johnston, who came to live with the Lincolns with three children of her own.
As a young man Lincoln moved to New Salem and lived for four years with his friend Joshua Speed in a bedroom above Speed's store.
Lincoln married in 1842, to Mary Todd. They bought a home in Springfield that they owned until Lincoln died. The couple had four children: Robert, Edward (Eddie), William (Willie), and Thomas (Tad). Eddie died at the age of three, and Willie died in 1862 while Lincoln was in the White House.
