After Caesar's death Cleopatra stayed neutral waiting to see how the war between the triumvirates and the assassins would turn out. Once the assassins were defeated, she made her move and allied herself with Marc Antony who was the supreme Roman authority in the east.

She loved Ceaser --- possibly. However Cleopatra made the mistake of trying to ally herself with the Roman rulers or the Roman strongmen that she came in contact with. She thought that this was a way to preserve her dynasty and her kingdom's independence as she was militarily weak and knew very well that Egypt would never be able to fend off a Roman attack.
