Because Herod perceived the birth of the Messiah as a threat to his rulership, he wanted to kill him, so after learning about his birth from some traveling astrologers (commonly referred to as "wise men") Herod asked them to report back to him when they'd located the baby.(Matthew 2:1-12)
Jesus referred to Herod as 'that fox'.

hThe challenge in the birth of Jesus is whether we believe in him or not. He was born to die on the cross for our sins and to rise again for our justification; as the angel said to his Mother when he was born, in Matthew 1.21. - And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. .
