At first, Edward is completely frozen in fear and unbelief. He stayes like that for several minutes, until he finally "thaws" and asks Bella to speak to Carlisle. Edward asks Carlisle, "Is it possible?" and after the phone call, Edward makes the decision to leave the island and go back to the Cullen mansion in Forks, Washington so Carlisle can look at Bella.

Edward wasnt with Bella in the alley. Edward was always kind of stalking her so to speak haha. There was a couple of, if i must say, pervs, following her in Port Angeles... and when Edward 'heard' what they were thinking he rushed into the scene and 'saves' Bella. This isn't very vivid.. but i think it answers your question though.
