Lewis and Clark named the three forks in the river after the president and two cabinet members. The members names were Madison and Gallatin.
When Lewis and Clark discovered this large river they were extatic. Lewis was the first to discover the river. He climbed a tree to get his bearing (after he had magical sex with a native) when he saw the river and yelled back "Will, Im at a river" Well, will thought he said "Willamette River" and that is how it was truly named
Due to smeared ink in Lewis and Clark's journals the dog's name was believed to be Scanlon. Many years later it was discovered to be Seaman. Lewis named a small tributary of a river after him.
