It was the first apparition of Jacob Marley
Jacob Marley, Ebeneezer Scrooge's old partner was the first visitor on Christmas Eve. He came to tell Scrooge how after his death, he was doomed to haunt the earth while carrying the weight of many chains because he was greedy while on earth. He warns Scrooge that his fate will be even worse unless he changes. Marley also warns Scrooge that he will be visited by three ghosts that night-the Ghosts of Christmases past, present, and future.
Scrooge hopes to see himself
The first ghost (having been foretold by Marley) was to take Scrooge back to his previous Christmases and allow Scrooge to see what it was like for him then and how this changed him
In the book " A Christmas Carol " scrooge sees the face of his old friend named Marley. I am not sure if this will help but I do recall that Marley has chains.
Scrooge hopes to see his deceased partner, Jacob Marley, at the home where Marley died. He also mentions hoping to see his former colleagues and acquaintances.

This is his first Christmas party when employed with Fezziwig. It was the very first time that Scrooge had been in an environment where Christmas was celebrated, we see and hear of his reaction when revisited with the Ghost of Christmas mas Past.
