The United States annexed new territory in former Mexico, and the Mexican government did not recognize it. Eventually, it came to violence until US forces captured the Mexican capital and forced them to surrender and agree to US terms.
The US forces beat the Mexican forces there in 1847, in the course of the Mexican-American war. It was also the site of the heroic death of six Mexican military cadets, who stood and fought to the death, covering the Mexican forces' retreat.
