The word butler is related to the word bottle. In the middle ages, the butler took care of the wine, beer, and cider. The term that might be used for this person today is cup bearer. A butler was a servant of middle stature, and the duties changed in time to what they are today.

There were no butlers in the medieval castle. The people who took care of the nobility were themselves minor nobility and they thought of it as way to show loyality and to gain power.
