Miss Sarah Margaret Ferguson married His Royal Highness The Prince Andrew ('the' means he is the son of the monarch, and not 'just' a prince). On the day of their wedding, Andrew's mother created the titles of Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killyleagh for him.

Sarah took on a feminised version of his titles. She became her Royal Highness The Duchess of York, Countess of Inverness and Baroness Killyleagh. She became a princess by marriage, just like Kate and Meghan. (Anne, Charlotte, Eugenie and Beatrice are princess by blood.)

When Sarah and Andrew divorced, Sarah stopped being a princess, and was allowed to use the title 'Sarah, Duchess of York'.
