The Cowardly Lion thought that he needed courage. But it was clear that he was far from cowardly. All along the Yellow Brick Road, and after, he showed great courage in the original 1900 book edition of The Wizard of Oz. For example, he leaped deep, wide ditches in a single bound, not once, but three times to get his friends Dorothy Gale and her pet dog Toto, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman over an otherwise insurmountable barrier. And in the beloved 1939 film version, he likewise most courageously tackled the scary Castle of the Wicked Witch of the West.
