The work was done most likely by a mixed workforce of free workers and slaves. Skilled workers such as masons, carpenters, tool makers, rope makers and the scribes (who supervised the project) would have been free workers. All the heavy unskilled labour such as dragging the stones, putting them in place and the rough quarrying was most likely done by the slaves. The slaves were naked, too low in status to wear clothes.
