William Shakespeare wrote the play and there have been many remakes in both stage, screen, and books.
Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare.

Believed to be written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597. This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it, bringing it more in line with Shakespeare's original.

Its plot is based on an Italian tale called "Historia novellamente ritrovata di due nobili amanti" ("Newly found story of two noble lovers"), which was written by Luigi da Porto (an Italian writer and storiographer born in Vicenza, 1485 - May 10, 1529).

It was then translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562.

It was then retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1582.

Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both, but developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris, in order to expand the plot.William Shakespeare...

The play 'Romeo and Juliet' is credited to William Shakespeare. He did not write the story, however; he stole it from a poem by a guy called Arthur Brooke called Romeus and Juliet. Brooke got the story from various Italian authors.

Hard to say, because Shakespeare's play is based on a poem by Arthur Brooke, which is based on an French story, which is based on an Italian story, which is based on another Italian story which is based on yet another Italian story and so on back into antiquity so that some scholars think that one ultimate source may be Ovid's story of Pyramus and Thisbe.
