Cleopatra had her servants sneak an asp in to her chamber by hiding it in a fruit basket. She did this so that she could commit suicide to spare her the life of a servant/slave to Octavian. She held the asp, which is a small viper, to her breast and allowed the snake to bite her with its deadly venom. According to Egyptian beliefs, a snakebite made you immortal which is the reason she chose this method of death.
