The 1987 war film 'Full Metal Jacket' which was directed by Stanley Kubrick occurs during the Vietnam War and follows a platoon of Marine recruits at Parris Island , South Carolina . After earning the title of US Marine they go on to Vietnam during the Tet Offensive of 1968 where several members of the original platoon meet again (Cowboy and Joker) . They proceed and go on to fight in the Battle for Hue City .
