There was the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys and then there is the movie Lords of Dogtown. Both are excellent and I would highly recommend it to skateboarders and even non-skateboarders for that matter. :)

Skateboarding was on and off with popularity but I would have to say the biggest rise of popularity would be the 70's in the whole Dogtown Z-Boys era.
Lots of viable answers: it became acceptable.... No longer is just for the outcasts as it was in the beginning. More people got really good and thus more money was thrown into the sport then translated to a bunch of tricks to snowboarding. and of course Tony Hawk merchandising the sport on PlayStation helped tremendously. X-Games, etc. the z-boys from dogtown/Venice, California - - - hence the movie that's based on a true story...The Lords of Dogtown
There are actually four of them, and they were teenagers living in California. There names were Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams, and Sid. I'm not to sure what Sid's last name was, but he had died of cancer. There is also a movie based on them called Lords of Dogtown.
