The first known photograph was taken in 1825 by "Niecphore Niepce." however the camera obscura and pinhole cameras were developed before that, they just had no way of recording the image that was produced. As for who discovered Photography that is unknown. the Camera Obscura goes back to the Chinese and Greeks.

Daguerre- who founded Daguerrotype, is generally considered the inventor around the mid-l9th century. the name means ( Of War) Daguerrotypes were amply used during the Civil War, by such exponents of Brady. a drawback was the relatively slow printing cycle- action photographs of battles were not practical the aftermath and destruction- static- yes. this imposed a certain damper. actually modern high-speed photography ( for example Football games) did not become practical until at least the thirties and the advent of 35MM photography.
