The area where Geelong, Victoria, now stands was first discovered by Lieutenant John Murray, who commanded the brig Lady Nelson. In February 1802, Murray manoevred the Lady Nelson through the narrow, treacherous entrance to Port Phillip Bay, now known as the Rip, so as to explore the bay. He discovered Corio Bay on 21 February 1802, but did not recommend the area for settlement, as he failed to notice the Barwon River which flows into the ocean (not the bay), through where Geelong now stands, on the inland side of a ridge.

Geelong was actually settled in March 1836 by three squatters, David Fisher, James Strachan and George Russell, who arrived to settle the area.
